Three copies of one report, one table: list the comments and tracked changes of .docx files

Three reviewers sent back three copies of the same report, and the comments are scattered across the files. Microsoft Word shows them one file at a time in a side panel; there is no list you can sort or paste into a sheet. Comment & Change List for .docx, a Windows app, puts the comments, replies and tracked changes of .docx files in one table. Microsoft Word does not need to be installed.

What is where on the screen

Tracked changes are insertions, deletions, text that was moved, and formatting changes (bold, italic, underline, font, size, colour, style, alignment and so on), each with its author and date. A change to a table row or cell and an inserted or deleted paragraph break are listed too. Adjacent pieces of one edit by the same person at the same time are one row.

The table you get

The columns are file, type, author, date, content, attached sentence, status, heading, place, paragraph, page (approximate) and reply to. Copy the table to paste it into a sheet, or save it as a CSV file (UTF-8; Japanese text opens correctly). The full edition also writes an Excel workbook with a sheet of every row and a sheet of the count per reviewer and kind; when several files were read, or a file could not be read, a third sheet has one line per file.

Free and full edition

The app is free. The free edition reads one file at a time and has the list, the filters (except the one-file filter), the detail view, CSV export, copy, and language and theme switching. The full edition is a one-time add-on ($2.99) bought through the Microsoft Store from the "Get the full edition" button in the app. It reads a whole folder or several files into one table and writes the Excel workbook.

Your data

Documents are never sent anywhere. Author names, comment text and tracked text are shown on the screen and go nowhere else. The app opens no network connection of its own; the only network use is the Microsoft Store, for checking and adding the full edition. It stores only its settings (language, theme and the last folder you picked), on this PC. A CSV or Excel file you save contains author names and text. Details are in the privacy policy.

What it cannot do

It reads .docx and .docm only; an old .doc is not read. A password-protected or damaged file is named on the screen with the reason, and the other files are still read. The resolved state appears only for files saved by recent versions of Microsoft Word. Dates are shown as the file wrote them, and the page number is an estimate. It does not claim to read every file correctly; what was tested is made-up files and packages built with the Open XML SDK.

FAQ

Do I need Microsoft Word?

No. The app reads the .docx file directly. It also reads a file that Microsoft Word has open.

Can it read an old .doc file?

No. A .doc file that you drop directly is named on the screen with the reason. A .doc inside a folder is skipped and not listed. A password-protected or damaged file is named with the reason, and the other files are still read.

Does it change my documents?

No. Files are only read. The app never changes, moves or deletes a document.

Some comments show no resolved or open status.

That state is written only in files saved by recent versions of Microsoft Word. Older files carry no such state, so the status column stays empty.

The dates look off.

Dates are shown as the file wrote them. The app does not convert time zones.

Does it read every file correctly?

It does not claim that. It was tested with made-up files and with packages built with the Open XML SDK; it was not checked against every file Microsoft Word can save. The page number is an estimate and appears only for files that carry Microsoft Word's page marks.
