How to stop Wix Bookings from taking bookings on holidays and closure days

You close for Obon, the New Year break or a public holiday, and you do not want clients booking those days. Wix Bookings has no "this date is closed" switch. This page walks through the workaround Wix itself describes: blocked time on each staff member's calendar.

Short answer

Wix Bookings has no vacation mode. Wix's help center says it is not available and the request is open＊2. The workaround it gives is to add your closed days to the Booking Calendar as blocked time＊2. From the desktop dashboard you can select several staff members in one block＊1.

How to block a day (desktop dashboard)

These are the steps in Wix's help article＊1, with its button names.

In your site's dashboard, open the Booking Calendar.
Click Add, or click the time slot you want to block.
Choose Blocked staff time, or Blocked resource for a room or equipment.
Check the date. Select Repeat for a recurring block. For a whole day tick All day, otherwise set a start and end time.
Open the Staff (or Resource) drop-down and tick every person or item to block.
In the Availability drop-down, choose what clients see (Busy by default).
Add a Title if you want one, then click Block.

With several holidays you repeat this once per date. For a shop that closes several times a year, that is the slow part.

Things that trip people up

Bookings you already have stay. A block only stops clients from booking new appointments in that period＊1. Cancel the existing ones yourself if you must.
Classes and courses are not stopped. Sessions already scheduled in that slot are not overridden by a block＊1. Change the sessions themselves.
Each staff member needs the block. Wix says regular availability is managed in Work Schedule, separately from blocks＊1. Forget one person and their slots stay bookable.
The Wix mobile app is not enough. Wix says that in the Wix app you cannot block several staff members at once or create repeating blocks, and that you can do both from a computer＊3.
All-day events from Google Calendar do not block. If you sync Google Calendar, give specific times instead＊2.

An app for many days

Entering Obon, New Year and every holiday one day at a time is tedious, so I built an app for it: Closure Days for Bookings. You pick dates or a Japanese-holiday preset, and it first shows how many bookings already exist on those days. When you confirm, it adds a block to every staff member's and every room's calendar. Undo asks for a confirmation and removes only the closures this app made. It is available on the Wix App Market.

What it cannot do: a service with no staff member and no room assigned cannot be stopped. It never cancels bookings you already have. So far it has only been tried on a development site, not on live shops.

Does Wix Bookings have a holiday or vacation mode?

What happens to bookings I already have on a blocked day?

According to Wix, nothing: a block only stops clients from booking new appointments in that period＊1. Classes or courses already scheduled in that slot are not overridden＊1.

Will an all-day event in my synced Google Calendar close the day?

Not according to Wix. Bookings does not block days added to Google Calendar as All Day events, so add specific times instead, such as 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM＊2.

Can the app stop every service?

No. It covers services that have a staff member or a room assigned. A service with neither cannot be stopped. So far it has only been tried on a development site.
