How to show allergen information on a Wix Restaurants menu
You want each dish on your menu to show allergens such as egg, wheat or shrimp, but the Wix Restaurants menu has no allergen field. This page covers what Wix itself offers, and the list of items that Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency sets for allergen labelling. Short version: what Wix's own tools give you is labels on each dish.

Short answer
A Wix Restaurants menu has no allergen field per dish. Wix's help center says it is not available and the request is open*2. The workaround it gives is to add labels such as Vegan or Gluten-Free to your menu items*2.
How to add labels (dashboard)
These are the steps in Wix's help article*1, with its button names.
- In your site's dashboard, open Restaurant Menus.
- Hover over the dish and click Edit.
- In the Info tab, scroll down to Labels.
- Choose an existing label, or create one with the option to add a new label.
- To rename, change the icon of, delete or create labels in one place, click Manage Labels (+ Add New Label, then Save & Add). A label needs both a name and an icon.
If you take online orders with Wix Restaurants, the Ordering tab has a checkbox, Let customers add a note to this item. Wix describes the notes as useful for things such as allergies or item requests*1. That is a field guests write in, not a table in which the shop publishes allergens.
Things that trip people up
- At most 5 labels per dish. That holds for existing and custom labels together*3. Japan alone has 9 mandatory items, so labels run out fast.
- No dish-by-allergen table. A label is a tag on one dish. Wix's own tools do not give you a chart that compares what each dish contains.
- No label does not mean "free of it". A dish with no label could be free of the allergen or simply not entered, and the screen cannot tell a guest which.
- Menu changes need allergen changes. If a recipe changes and the labels or a separate table do not, old information stays online.
Japan's allergen items (Consumer Affairs Agency)
The agency's diagram of allergen items (as of April 2026) lists 9 mandatory items ("specified raw materials") and 20 recommended items ("items equivalent to specified raw materials", labelling optional)*4.
- Mandatory (9): shrimp, cashew nut, crab, walnut, wheat, buckwheat, egg, milk, peanut
- Recommended (20): almond, abalone, squid, salmon roe, orange, kiwifruit, beef, sesame, salmon, mackerel, soybean, chicken, banana, pistachio, pork, macadamia nut, peach, yam, apple, gelatin
The agency's page says cashew nut was added to the mandatory items on 1 April 2026*5. Older material may still show 8. This list is the one used for allergen labelling of processed foods*6. What it means for a restaurant menu, this page does not decide: ask your public health center or the agency.
An app for a chart
I want a chart of what each dish contains on the site, so I made an app for it: Allergen Chart for Restaurants. In a dashboard page, the shop sets Contains, Does not contain or Not entered for each dish and allergen, and a widget on the site shows one card per dish. Each card lays out the 9 mandatory items as pictograms (an icon and a name), and Contains is red with the word "Contains" next to it, so it is never told apart by colour alone. A "?" on Not entered items keeps a blank from being read as "does not contain". Visitors can pick the allergens they want to avoid and narrow the dishes.
What it does not do: it does not detect allergens or guarantee legal compliance. The shop is responsible for the accuracy and currency of what it enters. It has not been checked on a live shop yet.
How it looks on the shop's site
The two pictures below are sample screens on a test site. The dishes are made up, and this is not a real restaurant's page.
- The caution note is always on top. It says the chart is a guide based on what the restaurant entered, and that anyone with a food allergy should confirm with staff before ordering. It shows in Japanese and English.
- Filtering is by the allergens to avoid. Only dishes entered as "does not contain" for every picked allergen stay. Not entered never counts as does not contain. The 20 recommended items open from "+ Recommended (20)".
- Contains is red and also written out. Does not contain is a pale cell with "− Not in", and Not entered is a dotted box with "?". Recommended items the shop has entered appear as small tags under the grid.
- Light and dark display can be switched. So can Japanese and English.

FAQ
Does a Wix Restaurants menu have an allergen field for each dish?
No. Wix's help center says an allergen section for menu items is not available and the request is open*2. The workaround it describes is to add labels such as Vegan or Gluten-Free to menu items*2.
Can labels carry the whole allergen list?
Often not. A menu item can have at most 5 labels, existing or custom*3, and Japan alone has 9 mandatory items*4.
Is allergen labelling required for restaurants in Japan?
This page does not decide that. The Consumer Affairs Agency's list of 9 mandatory items is the one used for allergen labelling of processed foods*6, and its page on dining out only says it aims to promote more information provision*5. Ask your public health center or the agency what applies to your shop.
Will the app make my menu legally compliant?
No. It is a display aid for what the shop enters. It does not detect allergens or judge what any law requires, and the shop is responsible for the accuracy and currency of what it enters.
