How to add alt text to Wix Stores product images in bulk, and find the ones missing it

You have hundreds of product images and some have no alt text. You want to find them and fill them without opening every product. Here is what Wix gives you, where it stops, and one way to do it in bulk.

Short answer

Wix edits product image alt text one product at a time. You open the product, use More Actions in Images and videos, and choose Edit Alt Text [1].
The only shortcut is Copy to all. It puts the same text on every image of that one product [1]. The help article describes no way to edit alt text across several products.
No list or filter of images without alt text. The product article mentions none. Generating alt text from the file name or the product name is not possible, and Wix is collecting votes for it [2].
The Accessibility Wizard works page by page. In the editor it can generate AI alt text for the images on a page [3]. Its bulk steps do not mention product images.
An app can count and fill across products. Product SEO Bulk Editor counts the images with no alt text (Free) and fills all of them from one template (Pro). It has no per-product choice.

What Wix lets you do

Open Products in the site dashboard and select a product.
In Images and videos, click the More Actions icon and choose Edit Alt Text.
Type the description. Optionally click Copy to all to use the same text for every image of this product.
Click Apply [1].

Menu names change, so check them in your own dashboard. If your product page is the previous version, Wix points to a separate article [1].

Where this stops

Per product only. With 300 products you repeat the steps 300 times. Copy to all saves work inside a product, not between products.
No product list of what is missing. The help article describes no filter or report for products, so you open each product and look.
No text from the file name or product name. Wix says this is not possible [2]. That page is a feature request, and its status can change.
The Accessibility Wizard works by page, not by product. It scans the site and offers AI alt text page by page, skipping images that already have it. Wix says the text may be inaccurate and should be checked [3], and that the wizard does not scan all parts of a site [4]. A Wix Studio article says images in apps such as Wix Stores can get alt text through the wizard [5], but the bulk AI steps do not mention product images, so try it on your own site first.

Doing it in bulk with Product SEO Bulk Editor

The app Product SEO Bulk Editor has an Image alt text panel. Press Check image alt text and it reads your products and reports, for example, “12 of 80 images have no alt text, in 7 products”. Videos are not counted. Up to 2,000 products are read, and the panel says so if it stopped there.

Free: the count of images and products without alt text.
Pro: the template fill, with one button. It covers every image with no alt text in the products read, up to the limit below. You cannot pick single products or images, and the product ticks elsewhere in the app do not change it. The default template is {product name} – image {n}, where {n} is the image’s number among that product’s images, from 1. You see a preview of the texts first (the first 10 products, with a count of the rest) and press a second button before anything is written.
Existing alt text is kept. Only images with no alt text get text. A product whose media cannot be sent back safely is left as it is, and the panel says how many.
Up to 100 products per run. If more are waiting, the panel says how many stay for the next run. After writing, the app reads the products back, and any it cannot confirm are reported.
Undo the last run. The last run is remembered in your browser. Undoing empties only the images that still hold the text the app wrote; a product edited since is left alone and counted. Only the latest run is kept, so with several runs only the last can be undone. It lives in that browser: another browser, or cleared site data, cannot undo it. The undo runs on one click with no second step.
New catalog only. It needs Wix Stores Catalog V3. On a store with the older catalog (V1) the panel says image alt text needs the new catalog and offers nothing else.

The default template gives each image of a product its own number. It does not look at the picture, so for important images write your own text on the product page. The app does not promise a higher ranking.

Can I edit alt text for many Wix products at once?

Not with Wix’s own tools, as far as the help articles I read show. Alt text is edited in each product’s Images and videos section, and Copy to all applies one text to the images of that one product.

Can Wix generate product image alt text automatically?

Not from the file name or the product name. A Wix feature-request page says this is not possible and that Wix is collecting votes. The Accessibility Wizard has an AI tool that works page by page, and its bulk steps do not mention product images.

Does the app overwrite alt text I already wrote?

No. It only fills images that have no alt text. Text that exists is kept.

Does it work on every store?

It needs the newer Wix Stores catalog (Catalog V3). On a store with the older catalog the panel only says it needs the new catalog.

Is the check free?

The free plan shows the count: how many images have no alt text and in how many products. The template fill, the preview and the undo are in Pro.
